The Ray of Hope Children's Learning Center and Sponsorship Programme

Ray of Hope

The Learning Centre

The Ray of Hope Learning Centre provides two classrooms: one for young children who have never had any schooling before, and one for older children who have had some previous experience with school.

The Ray of Hope Children's Centre strives to relocate and expand the services offered by The Learning Centre, including sponsorship for children to attend Kenyan formal schools.

The Learning Centre

History of the Learning Centre

The Ray of Hope Children's Centre is an expansion of the services offered by the existing Ray of Hope Learning Centre. The Learning Centre was developed in October 2006 to provide informal schooling services to HIV affected children in the impoverished Kawangware slum in Nairobi, Kenya.

Since then, the Learning Centre has grown to provide services to over 55 children in a cramped facility. While the Learning Centre has had great success in improving the quality of life of enrolled children (increasing literacy and decreasing malnutrition), children are still receiving an inadequate education. Unable to take standardized tests, the children at the Ray of Hope Learning Centre will not have the opportunity to attend secondary school.

The Ray of Hope Learning Centre Project represents a paradigm shift in the goals of the Ray of Hope Learning Centre from a simple informal school providing a remedial education to children who would otherwise receive none, to an integrated development program for the HIV affected children and their families. The program addresses the interrelated obstacles of poor education, malnutrition, and poor health that disrupt children's ability to learn and develop. The Children's Centre involves the children and requires commitment from their families to ensure success in and out of school. Children are provided with nutritious lunches, school supplies, enrichment services, extracurricular education, and free access to quality healthcare and check-ups. Ongoing adult education is also provided to enrolled families to ensure children enjoy a safe and healthy home environment.

With your help the Garden of Light Children's Centre can grow to provide services to many more children in Kawangware, Kenya.
